Can a Therapist See You Across State Lines? The Counseling Compact, Explained

The short answer

As a rule, a therapist can only see you when you are physically located in a state where they are licensed. The Counseling Compact changes that for licensed professional counselors, letting them practice across member states without a separate license in each one. In practice, it means you can often keep your counselor when you move to or travel in another compact state.

The rule most people do not know

Therapy licensure is based on where you are sitting during the session, not where your therapist is. So if you drive across a state line for a work trip, your usual therapist normally cannot see you there unless they are also licensed in that state. This trips up a lot of people who assume video means anywhere.

What the Counseling Compact is

The Counseling Compact is an agreement among participating states that grants qualified licensed professional counselors the privilege to practice in other member states. It was created to make care more portable, so clients are not cut off every time they cross a border or relocate.

How the privilege to practice works

A counselor who holds a license in one member state can apply for the privilege to practice in other member states. While practicing under that privilege, they follow the rules of the state where the client is located. For you, it simply means continuity without hunting for a new provider.

Why it matters

The compact is a real help for people whose lives cross state lines: those who relocate for work, students who move for school, military families, travelers, and snowbirds who split the year between states. You get to keep the relationship you have built instead of starting over.

What it does not do

The compact applies to licensed professional counselors, not every license type, and other professions have their own separate compacts. It also does not let a counselor ignore local rules. They still practice under the laws of the state where you are located.

What it means for A Plus clients

A Plus provides telehealth across Nevada and reaches Wyoming residents and clients in other compact states where its counselors hold the privilege to practice. If you are planning a move or split your time between states, it is worth asking whether your care can travel with you.
