The short answer

The DOT return-to-duty process is the path a safety-sensitive worker follows after a drug or alcohol violation. It has five steps, and a qualified Substance Abuse Professional guides every one of them.

The five steps

  1. Meet with a DOT qualified SAP for an initial evaluation.
  2. Complete the education or treatment the SAP recommends.
  3. Return to the SAP for a follow-up evaluation to confirm you are ready.
  4. Pass a return-to-duty drug or alcohol test arranged by your employer.
  5. Follow the SAP’s unannounced follow-up testing schedule, which runs one to five years.

How long it takes

The first evaluation is usually one appointment. The middle steps depend on the program you are assigned. Drivers who start quickly and stay engaged move through it much faster than those who delay the first call.

Frequently asked questions

Who runs the process?

A DOT qualified SAP. Your employer only provides the referral and administers the tests.

How long does follow-up testing last?

The SAP sets the schedule, which must include at least six unannounced tests in the first year and can extend up to five years.

Can I change jobs during the process?

Yes, but any DOT employer must see the process through and honor the follow-up testing plan.
